Lavala's Magic Lantern: The Story Behind Your Favorite GIFs
Ever wondered who's behind those looping masterpieces that brighten up your chats and social media feeds? Meet Lavalabs Moving Images GmbH & Co. KG, the unsung heroes of the GIF world. Let's dive into their story, filled with surprises, humor, and a whole lot of heart.
From a Garage to the World Wide Web
It all started in a humble garage in Berlin. Two friends, Jan Kallwejt and Sebastian Schmalenstroeer, were tinkering with an idea. They loved GIFs - those tiny, looping images that could bring a smile to anyone's face. But they noticed something missing: a simple, user-friendly way to create and share them. So, they decided to build their own platform. And thus, Lavalabs was born.
"We wanted to make GIFs as easy to create as a selfie." - Jan Kallwejt
Lavalabs launched their first product, Giphy Cam, in 2013. It was a hit! Suddenly, everyone could create their own GIFs with just a tap. From funny faces to dancing pets, the internet was flooded with a new wave of GIFs. Lavalabs had unleashed a GIF revolution.
From Laughs to Love
But Lavalabs wasn't just about laughs. They soon discovered that GIFs could also express deeper emotions. A GIF of a hug could convey comfort, a GIF of a sunset could express longing. They even created a GIF keyboard for Apple's iMessage, making it easier for everyone to share these emotional GIFs.
"GIFs are like emojis, but with more context. They can tell a whole story in just a few seconds." - Sebastian Schmalenstroeer

GIFs for Good
Lavalabs also uses their GIF power for good. They've partnered with charities to create awareness GIFs, like a series of GIFs showing the effects of climate change. They've even created GIFs to raise funds for disaster relief. Talk about making a difference, one loop at a time!
GIFs of the Future
Today, Lavalabs is a team of 30, working tirelessly to make GIFs even better. They're experimenting with augmented reality GIFs, interactive GIFs, and even GIFs that can be controlled by your voice. The future of GIFs is here, and it's looking pretty awesome.
So, the next time you send a GIF to make someone laugh, or to express how you feel, remember Lavalabs. They're the ones behind the magic, making your digital world a little bit brighter, one loop at a time.
