Hotel Zur Traube + China Restaurant Golden Lotus
So, there I was, wandering the cobblestone streets of Heidelberg after a long day of exploring, when my stomach started rumbling like a distant thunder. I was craving something authentic, something that would make my taste buds dance the Lambada. And then, like a beacon in the night, I saw it - the Hotel Zur Traube with its charming facade and the China Restaurant Golden Lotus attached to it, winking at me with its neon lights.
Now, I've stayed in my fair share of hotels, but this one had a certain je ne sais quoi. It was like walking into someone's grandma's house, but with a twist. The walls were adorned with paintings that looked like they'd been there since the Renaissance, and the furniture was a mix of antique and modern, like they couldn't decide which century they wanted to live in. But hey, I wasn't complaining. It had character, and that's something you can't find in those sterile, cookie-cutter hotels.
But let's talk about the real reason I was there - the food! The China Restaurant Golden Lotus was like a hidden treasure in this historic hotel. The moment I stepped in, I was transported to another world. The red lanterns, the jade dragons, the Forbidden City-inspired decor - it was all so kitschy and wonderful, I felt like I was in a Martial Arts movie.
I sat down, and before I could even say "Ni Hao", the waiter was there with the menu. Now, I'm no stranger to Chinese food, but this menu was like a War and Peace of culinary delights. I mean, there were so many dishes, I could've opened a restaurant of my own just by ordering one of everything. But I didn't want to look like a glutton, so I settled for a few classics.
First up was the Kung Pao Chicken. Now, I've had my fair share of this dish, but this was something else. The peanuts added a nice crunch, the chilies gave it a kick, and the chicken was so tender, it was like it had been massaged by a team of professional masseuses. I was in heaven, and I hadn't even ordered the main course yet.

Next, I went for the Crispy Duck. I mean, who can resist a dish that sounds like it's been deep-fried in a vat of liquid gold? And boy, was it worth it. The skin was crispy, the meat was juicy, and the pancakes were soft and fluffy. It was like a party in my mouth, and everyone was invited.
But the pièce de résistance, the cherry on top, the grand finale - it was the Fried Ice Cream. I know, I know, it sounds like an oxymoron. But trust me, it's a thing, and it's glorious. The outside was crispy, the inside was cold and creamy, and the whole thing was dusted with cinnamon sugar. It was like a snowball fight in my mouth, and I was the winner.
So, if you ever find yourself in Heidelberg, hungry and in need of a culinary adventure, do yourself a favor and check out the Hotel Zur Traube and the China Restaurant Golden Lotus. Just remember, when in doubt, order the fried ice cream. You can thank me later.
